Analyze a Supervisor
  • Supervisor was at a summer drive in restaurant.
  • When a supervisor communicates effectively- they get the most out of their employees in satisfaction and production. (pg. 423).
  • Did a great job of following the five principles for effective downward communication.
  • He stressed the importance of communication. If people need subs for work or can't make it to work, communication is required to keep things flowing smoothly.
  • He also listened emphatically. Everyone's opinion was listened to. Although he was the boss, he knew others had good opinions.
  • The supervisor was also very polite in his requests and never demanding something with out talking things over.
  • The supervisor was extremely sensitive to others feelings. Many of the workers are still in high school, so there feelings can be hurt more easily.
  • Finally, the supervisor included his workers in talks of relevant information pertaining to the company. If there was an important announcement, he would always make sure everyone knew about it.

These principles have a great influence on mixed status relationships. For instance, workers would much rather prefer an environment in which they respect their boss and they respect them back. If the supervisor follows the five principles for effective downward communication, then the work environment is going to be one in which everyone can achieve success and work towards individual and group goals.
