Relationships can always be "dicey" at times. They truly do require a lot of work to maintain. We have all been in situations were we have possessed information but knew disclosing it would be problematic.
One such instance: I knew that a friend and teammate of mine lied about his golf score in a match, resulting in him getting a lower score.
There were many things that lead to my difficult decision:
My Decision: Talked to my friend and said I saw what happened.
Was my choice ethical?
Is it always cooperative to disclose information?

One such instance: I knew that a friend and teammate of mine lied about his golf score in a match, resulting in him getting a lower score.
There were many things that lead to my difficult decision:
- My friend was older than me.
- I was unsure how he would react.
- By telling the coaches, we could get disqualified.
- Possibility that my friend may say I'm wrong.
My Decision: Talked to my friend and said I saw what happened.
- He told me he did cheat but not to tell anyone because he would get kicked of Varsity for the rest of the year.
- I decided that the best thing was for him to address the coaches on the ride home.
- Our relationship was still intact.
- I just let him know that I did not want him to get in trouble in the future and that he should be demonstrating better sportsmanship.
Was my choice ethical?
- Somewhat
- It was somewhat ethical because I addressed the issue.
- It was somewhat unethical because I did not tell the coaches during the match.
Is it always cooperative to disclose information?
- Very difficult question.
- I feel you have to consider all parties in the situation.
- Have to ask, will these severely hurt someone by releasing this information?
- Or, will these severely hurt someone by NOT releasing this information?
